Population Distribution
The mid-year estimate
of population for the year is 1,315,552 comprising of 666,573
females and 648,979 males. The geographical and administrative
distribution of population is given in table 2.2 below. The spatial
distribution suggests that the rate of urbanization is 43.3 per cent.
Changes in definition currently opted by the NBS (that consider most
part of the Western district and some of the
developed areas along
the cost-line as urban areas) may place most of the Zanzibar
population as urban in the near future. The distribution is not
unbiased towards Mjini Magharibi administrative region, where Zanzibar
City – the administrative and business centre is located. The region
shares about two-fifths (37.6 per cent) of the total population.
Kusini (U) has the least population size among administrative regions,
accounting to only 8.7 per cent of the total population. Pemba, the
sister of the two main islands shares two-fifths (39.7 per cent)
of the total population. The average population
density - the number of individuals per square kilometer,
stands at about 500 persons. At its concentration in Mjini district the
density is about 17,760 persons per square kilometer. Analysis of
composition suggests that more of the population (56.7 per
cent) live in rural areas.
